EFJ is looking for a Communications and Monitoring Assistant

The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) is looking for a full-time Communications and Monitoring Assistant to join a diverse team of seven staff based in Brussels.

The EFJ is the largest journalists’ organisation in Europe representing over 70 national journalists’ organisations in over 44 countries. It is recognised by the European Union and the Council of Europe as the representative voice of journalists in Europe.

The Communication and Monitoring Assistant will report directly to the General Secretary and to the EFJ Communications & Project Officer, but he/she is required to work closely with all staff members. He/She will be able to work on a diverse range of issues related to journalism and the trade union movement (labour rights, media freedom, ethics, the safety of journalists, SLAPPs, etc).

Communications

- Write press releases for the EFJ website;

- Manage EFJ social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)

- Create visuals

- Assist in drafting EFJ newsletters

- Send communications to EFJ affiliates

- Support with campaigns

Monitoring

- Verify information and write alerts on media freedom violations for Mapping Media Freedom and Council of Europe monitoring platforms 

- Assist in drafting monitoring reports

- Offer legal and practical support to journalists in need

- Organise outreach meetings

Project-related work

- Contribute to creative brainstorming for related project activities and outreach;

- Contribute to team meetings and planning processes

- Contribute to reporting

Skills and abilities required

- Excellent writing and communications skills

- Good understanding of the journalism sector and media freedom issues in Europe

- High command of English, native level (French and/or German an asset)

- Strong team spirit and creativity

- Proactive, able to be hands-on and provide active support to colleagues

- Able to work independently, demonstrate initiative

- Sense of information

- Familiar with Slack, Canva, WordPress

- Desirable: experience in journalism 

Additional information

This is a permanent contract and includes flexible remote work.

Remuneration will depend on experience with additional benefits: lunch voucher, holiday pay, 13th month, etc.

Candidates should be available to start mid-September 2022.

Closing date for applications: Friday 5 August 2022. However, applications will be evaluated on an ongoing basis and interviews may be held beforehand. Applicants are therefore encouraged to apply as soon as possible. The application process includes a short writing exercise.
